METEORA CLIMBING GUIDE – ROCKTOPUS
Meteora climbing guide – Olympus climbing guide – Rocktopus
Meteora, an UNESCO’S World Heritage Monument, constitute a unique global geological phenomenon. It is a complex of imposing conglomerate rocks scattered in the northwest edge of Trikala, appearing to come out from nowhere. It’s name means “suspended rocks”. They were formed about 25 to 30 million years ago when the plain of Thessaly was covered by sea. Huge amounts of stones and sediments were accumulated in the bottom by the ocean currents shaping large boulders. After a series of earth movements the area of Thessaly was lifted and the opening of Tempi Valley occurred through which the waters were poured into the Aegean Sea revealing the boulders. Continuous geological changes and extreme weather conditions such as, strong winds, glacier movements and high temperatures caused adjacent erosions to the boulders which after millions of years were transformed into the current rock pillars. Rock climbing in these pillars is unparallel. There are single and multi-pitch routes. The sense of escape and freedom is mixed with a strong notion of touching the sky and feel the devine presence. The view from the top is breathtaking while rapelling to the ground is the epilogue of a unique experience.
